It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.
It started with a very full day on Sunday. During Morning Worship we concluded a sermon series that we’d taken a break from for a few weeks. We had a small group of people gather for that service.
Afterward, Earl met with Shirley in the front room. They had completed their preparation and so it was time for her Evangelists Blessing. Just after they finished the young adults arrived for the football game.
At Kids’ Church we learned the story of the three men and the hot furnace. We had a new and a bit complex craft for them to do. The projects turned out quite well even with the complexity.
Once Kids’ Church was over, Tamara, Jenn, Sarah, and I walked some kids down to Burger King for milkshakes. The kids had earned them for coming to church more than 20 times since July. Not all the kids who were scheduled to go were able to make it so we have a bit of a backlog of kids who we owe milkshakes.
Though we had a small group at Evening Worship we had quite a few prayer requests. A lot of things are happening in people’s lives right now.
On Monday while I was in Staples getting copies run, Doreen, the manager, came up to me. She asked if we’d be interested in getting some free overstock items that they were getting rid of. The places they had been giving them to had stopped picking things up and since I was there all the time she thought we might like to have them. Needless to say, I was glad to say yes. She said they’re in the middle of packing things up and would let me know when I could pick them up.
Later that day I went back to St. Mary’s Seminary to register to audit a class. Next semester I’ll be taking the class “Theology and Sociology of the City.”
Around 85 kids participated in Wednesday’s SonRisers activities. Afterward Sue, the nursing student, and I started putting together plans for a possible babysitting class to offer to our middle school aged girls.
As she left Smitty arrived for a meeting. As we were finishing up out time together he asked about scheduling a date for his baptism. We decided on Sunday, December 7, during Morning Worship. I met Dave, our Mission Center President, for lunch afterward.
That evening after the NA meeting we had our annual business meeting. In it we elected officers, sustained officers, changed some of our election procedures, and approved the budget.
We put together our Advent packets this week. Each contains a letter from the pastor encouraging people to take time out of the hectic holiday schedule to focus on Christ. Included in the packet is an Advent calendar with daily scripture readings in preparation for Christmas.
Friday brought Pizza Church. The second group was especially large and restless so we broke them into five different groups to disburse that energy around the room rather than concentrate it in one spot.
Someone took all the covers off the outdoor lights and put them in the street sometime Friday night. Fortunately, we were able to retrieve them before any further damage took place.
We had a good visit with some senior high boys during Saturday’s Sundae Church. Things were going well enough that we let them stay later than normally would be allowed.
Looking ahead to next week we have an adjusted schedule of activities. Due to Thanksgiving, we will not have Adult Disciples on Wednesday evening and Thursday’s NA group will not be using the church. Those are the only two deletions from the schedule. We will add, though, a dessert potluck after Evening Worship on Sunday. We’ll also be distributing our Advent packets on Sunday to those who are there then mailing them out to those who are not.
