It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.
It started out Sunday with Morning Worship. Crystal came in with paperwork and money in hand to register for next weekend’s Mission Center Ski Retreat. The forms were due in by Sunday so we were anticipating others coming later in the day, too. During the message we learned about some warning signs of deception.
We had a larger group at Kids’ Church this Sunday. Among them were four boys who were playing around outside and watching in the windows to see when the lesson was over. They came in just in time for the crafts. I took them aside to redo the lesson with them while Jenn, Tamara, and Vonceil took the rest to start their projects. When I started talking with them about Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, one boy disgustedly piped in that he already knew this story and didn’t need to hear again how Simon Peter was in the belly of a fish for three days. We were able to correct that thought and still have time for the craft.
With the Raven playing the Steelers in the playoffs at the same time as Evening Worship, we decided to cancel the service. The young adults who gathered at the church to watch the game brought a full meal instead of snacks in celebration of this last game together for the season.
I got another set of forms for the ski retreat in my mail slot of Monday. I learned that Damon had gotten permission from Sarah to turn them in late.
We had a surprisingly small group of kids at SonRisers on Wednesday. Because of this we now have enough leftover donuts in the freezer for the next Solid Rock Café. Sarah came to help that morning and was able to pick up ski retreat forms.
After SonRisers I had a meeting with Marjorie. We finalized some of the plans and divided up responsibilities for the university’s health fair at the church on Sunday, March 8. We also discussed the possibilities of the church being used in the future for a weekly health screening site.
I got an update after the NA meeting about the man who ran the meetings for several years. He was diagnosed several months ago with prostate cancer and is not doing well at all. That evening the Adult Disciples group continued its study of the Gospel of Matthew.
Throughout the week, but especially on Thursday, we spent quite a lot of time on bookkeeping, logistics, marketing, and paperwork. We printed and mailed the donation receipts for 2008, designed and printed posters about the “Big Game” party on February 1, solidified some of the summer calendar, and many other odds-and-ends.
On Friday evening, Tamara, Jenn, Crystal, and Damon took off for the ski retreat. It is hosted the the Chester-Richmond, Virginia, congregation. They’ll be back sometime Sunday afternoon.
Robert and I stayed here for Pizza Church. One boy who came had gotten his head shaved this week. He claimed that it wasn’t shaved but that he had cancer and that it had all fallen out. I asked what kind of cancer it was, and he said, “Hair.”
We had a few guys show up Saturday night for Sundae church. Already the discussions are all about the events of this summer, like camp, Spectacular, and IYF. They are all really looking forward to these activities.
Looking ahead to next week we have our regular schedule of activities. The folks who went to the ski retreat will return sometime Sunday afternoon. Dave and I are getting together on Thursday for my annual evaluation. I’m scheduled for jury duty on Friday so I may be late to Pizza Church. We’ll also be making preparations throughout the week for the upcoming “Big Game” party on February 1.
