6/7/2009

It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.

It started out Sunday with me realizing that I accidentally send double copies of last week’s report to some of the subscribers. Sorry about that.

We celebrated Pentecost at Morning Worship. A man who was in town visiting from New Mexico came and joined us in worship. He found us through our web site. Sunday’s message on hope finished the series we began on Easter.

After the service Lou asked if she could be baptized. We scheduled the event for June 14.

At Kids’ Church we learned the story of Pentecost. The kids made flame hats out of construction paper for their project that day.

A couple of young adults we hadn’t seen in church for a while came to Evening Worship. One of them we see every few months but the other one hadn’t been by in years. It was good to catch up with what has been happening in their lives as a part of the sharing time.

Gloria led the Friends of Carroll Park meeting on Tuesday evening at the AME church. It seemed to be a very productive meeting.

We were greeted Wednesday morning with some kind of lotion smeared all over the glass doors at the back of the church. 66 kids participated in this week’s SonRisers activities. We were expecting fewer kids due it being the end of the school year and were pleasantly surprised with the number who came.

From there I walked downtown to University Hospitals to visit Theresa. She was sitting up and doing much better.

That evening the Adult Disciples group continued its study of the book of Acts. Afterward, Jenn and I had a short meeting to synchronize our planning for the rest of the summer.

When I got home that night I had an email from Sue. She was scheduled to be the camp nurse. She works at Johns Hopkins hospital and had just learned that due to a nursing shortage their summer vacation times were slashed and she wouldn’t be free to come. I immediately contacted Sarah about this and Marjorie put out an APB to her recent students to see if any were available to take Sue’s place.

Marjorie and I met for a breakfast meeting Thursday morning. We reviewed programming from the last year and began to envision future collaborations.

When I got home that morning Damon let me know via Facebook that Rayvon had been shot. I hurried Shock Trauma at University Hospitals to find out what was going on. I was able to see him and visit with his mom and sister. He’d been hit 3 times in the gut. He is expected to recover but will be in some serious pain for a long time.

That night Men’s Group went out for ice cream. We haven’t been as disciplined about meeting this semester but decided to round off the season at Friendlys.

After over 125 years, Friday was the final day of classes at Catholic Community School. Not only has this school been where Bryce and Onalee attended, it’s been a good ministry partner over the years. For example, they participated in the Peacemobile when it was in town and have regularly helped distribute fliers for upcoming events at the church. We will miss them.

Friday night brought Pizza Church. Sarah and I staffed the evening. The first two groups learned a story from Acts while the senior high kids read the book of Titus together. After I got home I got a call from a church member who had someone in her life commit suicide the day before.

On Saturday morning I went to see Damon, Carlo, and Scott play one of their last indoor football games of the season. On my way home I stopped by University Hospitals to visit people. As I was going in the front door I met up with a friend of the church I hadn’t seen in a long time. While inside I visited with Theresa but couldn’t visit Rayvon due to some new restrictions. On my way back to the car I came across a kid we haven’t seen at church for a while. He was walking across town to help a friend set up for his graduation party.

That afternoon we worked on some summer marketing projects. We updated and installed the posters that go in the front sign. We had a 50% off coupon for postcards so we designed and ordered cards for Bible School.

We’ve been fielding questions and getting information from our kids who are going to IYF and Spectacular later this summer. The last one to get their forms filled out turned his in today. All but one now have their state identification cards. Some of the parents are more excited about their kids going than are the kids themselves.

Looking ahead to next week we have our regular schedule of activities. Tuesday night the Citizens of Pigtown will have their monthly meeting at the church. Since this is the last week of school in the public schools we have our last SonRisers of the year this Wednesday. Adult Disciples are also taking most of the summer off this year so Wednesday is our last session for that group, too. While that is happening on Wednesday night the other part of the building will host a group responsible for home improvement grants for residents of James Street. In addition, we have our monthly priesthood meeting on Thursday evening. On Saturday we have our monthly Solid Rock Café and will need to set up and fill the font that night, too.

And finally, with summer upon us, vacation, camp, and a variety of other activities often keep me away from the computer on Saturday nights. Therefore, THIS WEEK at the POWER HOUSE will be a bit sporadic in its publication between now and the end of August. On weeks that you don’t get a report, please know that we’re all right but in need of some extra prayer from you to keep things going through this hectic season.

Along with the individuals and activities mentioned, please keep the following families in the forefront of your prayers:

The Burley Family

The Lucas Family

The Burton Family

The Miles Family

The Shorter Family

The Gerber Family

The Barton Family

The Teller Family

Thank you for your continued prayer support.
