It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.
It started out Sunday with our three services. During Morning Worship we focused on some specific prayer needs for peoples around the world. At Kids’ church we continued to learn about Moses. After Evening Worship we had cake and ice cream to celebrate Earl’s birthday.
In cleaning out a drawer this week I ran across an attendance list from a Solid Rock Café from exactly three years ago. It was quite interesting to note. We’ve lost track of about half the kids that were on that list. One had been killed and two were now young parents. Several are dealing drugs. A couple of them have been or are in jail. Four of them are still very active in church and working to attend Graceland University.
75 kids participated in Wednesday’s SonRisers activities. Just as it was ending a fight broke out in the alley next to the church. We were able to break it up and get the kids moving on separate paths toward school.
Much of the rest of the day involved meetings. I met with Joe at the Laundromat to get his help in promoting our upcoming Night Clinic. Tamara and I met with Sue from the nursing school to come up with ideas and programming around the issue of teen pregnancy. Later that day I met with Dave, our mission center president, to discuss some issues around the Associate Pastor position.
Because it was a person’s anniversary celebration, the Narcotics Anonymous meeting went a little over time. When it was over we had to move quickly to get the church set up for Family Bowling. We had a slightly smaller group in attendance for bowling, but the families that were new to the church last week were all there again this week.
One of our members had a problem with her food stamps this week and was in danger of loosing them. We spent some time this week helping her straighten things out.
On Friday Ebony and Robert met with me for some premarital counseling. Afterward I was able to visit with Tim. He’s living in a nursing home right now while he heals from an amputation and continues to fight lung cancer.
That afternoon 6 women gathered at the church, filled the van with their luggage, then headed off to Deer Park Campgrounds in New Hope, Pennsylvania, for their annual retreat. Five of the women were veterans of the retreat while Tayvia was on her first trip there. They’ll return on Sunday afternoon.
Friday night brought Pizza Church. We had good participation throughout the evening. This was despite the fact that most of our middle school boys were at the school for an overnight activity. Last week the girls had their overnight at the school. The new principal is working hard at building a better relationship with the kids and the community and this is just one thing she’s been doing.
Looking ahead to next week we have our full schedule of activities. We will, however, not have Evening Worship on Sunday because we’ll be setting up for the Night Clinic. The clinic will be from 8:00 p.m. until midnight. In addition, we’ll be looking for the women who were at the retreat to get back into town mid-afternoon on Sunday. Next Saturday is our monthly Sundae Church.
