9/6/2008

It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.

It started with our three services on Sunday. With the holiday weekend, we expected either a full house or small groups throughout the day. Both Morning Worship and Evening Worship had small groups while Kids’ Church had a normal sized group.

I got a knock on my door Monday night. It was Robert letting me know that someone had hit his car. Everyone was OK but the car had some serious damage. I almost didn’t answer the door when he knocked as kids had spent several hours in the evening knocking on the door, banging on our windows, peeking through the mail slots, and other such annoyances and I thought it might be them again.

We had just over 50 kids participate in SonRisers on Wednesday morning. So far the new principal at the middle school is doing a good job of encouraging kids to be at school on time. We’ll see how this impacts participation this year and what programmatic adjustments we’ll need to make in response.

After SonRisers I met with the new community development person from the elementary school. She’s new on the job and learning about community resources and dynamics. We visited for about 90 minutes.

Much of the day on Wednesday was spent working on fliers, posters, postcards, and other marketing materials for some upcoming activities. These included the Family Bowling Nights and the young adult Ravens games.

That night after the Narcotics Anonymous meeting the Adult Disciples group set up the equipment for our Family Bowling Nights. Danny hung the new banner while the rest untangled electronics. We wanted to give everything a trial run to make sure things worked the way we had hoped. We had a lot of fun bowling for a while on each machine.

I was able to visit with Joe at the Laundromat on Thursday. He agreed to hang the promotional posters we’d made. That afternoon Josh came over to use my computer to apply for some jobs.

After Thursday’s Narcotics Anonymous meeting, Danny and I met together. We reviewed, prioritized, and organized a list of items in the building that needed to be repaired. We decided which ones needed us to hire someone, which ones we could do ourselves, and which ones needed some form of a congregational work party to complete. Several things on the list would be taken care of quite easy if we had the right materials. We made a list of those things and I bought them Friday at Home Depot.

Friday night brought Pizza Church. We had good attendance at all three sessions. The first two groups began learning the story of Moses while the third group continued its study of the Gospel of John.

We woke on Saturday to a tropical storm. Since our plan at the Pigtown Festival required electronics we chose not to set up our booth. Robert and I went down to see the few who had braved the weather. We visited with a couple of people then everyone decided to give up and go home. Even the pigs stayed in their trailer instead of coming out for a walk.

When I got to the church on Saturday night I wasn’t totally surprised to find that some water from the storm leaked into the walls at the same spot we’ve had trouble with before. Try though we might, we can’t seem to seal up the seam between the old and new building.

Looking ahead to next week we have our full schedule of activities. In addition, the young adults will celebrate the opening of football season with the Ravens game on the plasma TV on Sunday afternoon. The Citizens of Pigtown will meet at the building on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday evening we’ll launch our Family Bowling Nights while Saturday brings our monthly Solid Rock Café.
