1/4/2009

It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.

It started out Sunday with Morning Worship. During the service, Crystal was baptized and confirmed. Vonceil baptized her and Danny and I did the confirmation.

At Kids’ Church we learned the story of Jesus in the Temple when he was 12 years old. We had a coloring page to go with it then decorated some of the remaining Christmas cookies for our snack.

We had a small group at Evening Worship. As a part of the service we reflected on how we had been blessed in 2008. Shortly after that service ended, the young adults celebrated in the front room as the Ravens won their game and advanced to the playoffs.

With New Years Eve celebrations, the only activity we had at the church on Wednesday was the Narcotics Anonymous meeting. The building was also closed on Thursday for New Years.

This week all the homeowners in the neighborhood received new tax assessments on our houses. The jump in assessed values was nothing less than shocking. The new tax rate, phased in over the next three years, will challenge some people to keep their homes. Some property tax bills are going up an additional $100 per month.

On Friday I visited with Julia. She’s been in a nursing home on the other side of town for the past few months and I finally got a chance to get over there during visiting hours. Afterward, I met Patty Ballinger for lunch.

Friday night brought Pizza Church. We had good groups throughout the evening. We had some kids who know they are too young (as they are reminded each week) especially disappointed that they couldn’t come in that day. Somehow, they thought they would be admitted because their cousin, who is three years older than them and eligible to participate, was allowed in. So, we started church with a second grade boy sitting in front of the doors of the church crying.

I spent a good portion of the day on Saturday outlining the curriculum for Adult Disciples for the upcoming year. We now have lesson topics lined up from now through next Thanksgiving, less about 8 weeks in the summer when we’ll be doing some different things that are yet to be determined.

That evening Tamara, Jenn, and I took a couple of kids to Friendly’s. The kids had earned the trip by having come to church at least 40 times in the last six months. While we were there, Danny was at the church draining the font.

Looking ahead to next week we have our regular schedule of activities. SonRisers resumes on Wednesday along with Adult Disciples. Sunday night I have a teleconference and Thursday night is our priesthood meeting. Next Saturday I’ll be in New York City for the “Preaching for Life Change” seminar. Saturday night is our monthly Solid Rock Café.
