4/25/2009

It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.

It started out very early Sunday morning with one man in the congregation calling several members to wish them a good morning. Many of those he called were still asleep when the phone rang.

When I connected the computer to the sound system I learned that the power surges during the Easter electric outages had done further damage to our speakers. They still work, but the sound is really bad.

We had a small group gather for Morning Worship. However, a few minutes into it about a half dozen young kids from my block came in and sat down. Much to everyone’s surprise, they made it through the entire service without needing direct adult supervision. The topic for the morning was “Hope on the Streets.” The story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus was our scripture for the day.

During Kids’ Church we continued our study of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. After learning the story, the kids had a coloring page and a maze to work on.

After Evening Worship Tamara and Vonceil spent a few minutes in counseling with a member who was at the service. After that, we took the community health survey forms that people had filled out throughout the day over to Marjorie’s house so she could get them to her nursing students.

Gloria and I went across town to the funeral home on Monday to pay our respects to Julia. While there we visited with Stella, met or renewed acquaintances with other family members, and visited with some of our neighbors.

That night at 11:45 I got a phone call from the alarm company. It was not an emergency call but a courtesy call to remind us that our system is not working properly. I then spent some time on the phone with a customer service agent discussing the inappropriateness of calling that late at night for a non-emergency situation. After a while they figured out a way to not do that again.

60 kids participated in Wednesday’s SonRisers activities. Afterward we took some of the leftover donuts to the Middle School for the staff there to share.

That evening Sarah led people through the Youth Worker Safety course. Some of those present were updating their training while others were reviewing things for the first time prior to becoming registered youth workers.

I spent Thursday and Friday in training. I was able to participate in the Catalyst conference sponsored by InJOY. The speakers addressed many issues we’re facing in the congregation and provided hope in what can come from them.

Nursing students continued providing home health care visits for people in the congregation. They are nearing the end of their semester so this next week will be the last of the visits.

Friday night brought Pizza Church. As is normal this time of year, we had smaller groups throughout the evening.

The kids at Sundae Church on Saturday evening were more chatty than usual. We especially got to hear about lots of funny things happening in their schools.

Looking ahead to next week we have our regular schedule of activities. In addition, we have a baby blessing scheduled for Morning Worship. After the blessing, Sarah will bring the message during that service. The alarm company is scheduled to come out and fix our alarm again this Wednesday morning. Throughout the week we’ll be continuing to track down signatures for camp forms. Next Saturday is our Mission Center Conference in Washington, DC. We’ll also be preparing for next Sunday’s concert by the Arundel Singers.
