10/19/2008

It’s been a busy week at the Power House in Baltimore, Maryland.

It started out Sunday with a full day. A few people were out sick from Morning Worship but we had a couple of guests who filled their seats. About a half dozen young adults watched the Ravens game together that afternoon. At Kids’ Church we made booklets of the Ten Commandments. Evening Worship revolved around a baby blessing.

Tuesday evening brought the Citizens of Pigtown meeting. They went quite a bit overtime as they had officials there to discuss the upcoming referendum that could allow slot machine gambling in Maryland. If it passes, a slot parlor would likely be built at the edge of our neighborhood.

Around 70 kids participated in Wednesday’s SonRisers activities. As we were finishing up, the principal from the elementary school came by to tell us that we didn’t have her permission to give kids from her school donuts any more. Since we never needed her position to do this in the first place and it doesn’t interfere with school hours, this was a bit disturbing. The conversation did not go very well. We’re still in a good relationship with the middle school principal but we’ve got some work to do now with the elementary school.

Nurse Sue had a death in her family this week so she had to cancel the New Moms group on Wednesday. She’ll be able to resume the gatherings once she’s back in town.

About 50 people came out on Wednesday evening for Family Bowling. Several of them were there for the first time. We’ve only done about ¼ of our original marketing plan for this activity and we’re running at capacity most Wednesday evenings.

On Thursday morning I met with one of the visitors who was at Morning Worship on Sunday. I learned where he was on his spiritual walk and he requested we start going through our Footings class materials right away. We’ll be starting that together next week.

For the first time since summer we had a Priesthood Meeting this Thursday evening. With so much happening we had a very long agenda. We had some healthy discussion but didn’t get through the entire agenda in the allotted two hours. We had, however, covered the most pressing material. We may need a 20-minute meeting to tie up some loose ends between now and our November meeting.

On Friday morning Tony and Charmaine Chvala-Smith arrived. They hadn’t been here in several years so we started out by walking around the neighborhood so they could see some of the projects the congregation has been a part of.

That night brought Pizza Church. We had good groups for the first two sessions. Unfortunately, no kids came for the senior high group.

On Saturday morning Tony, Charmaine, and I headed down to Springfield, Virginia, for the mission center’s Ministry Development Workshop. They were the presenters for the day. From there they were spending the night elsewhere then participating in the Sunday morning services at the Dundalk, Maryland, congregation.

On Saturday evening Tamara, Jenn, and I took a couple of kids out to Friendly’s for ice cream sundaes. The kids had earned a trip there by having come to church over 40 times in past 15 weeks.

Looking ahead to next week we have our full schedule of activities. In addition, the Chvala-Smiths will be joining us for Kids’ Church and Evening Worship on Sunday. We’ll have a potluck dinner after Evening Worship. They’ll fly home on Monday. On Wednesday, a group of students and teachers from Diggs-Johnson Middle School will be having a luncheon and community panel discussion at the church. On Thursday morning I’ll begin teaching our Footings classes. Next Saturday is our monthly Sundae Church.
